In a post on Instagram, Oprah Winfrey announced the passing of her father and shared a recent video of Vernon Winfrey enjoying a Fourth of July cookout at his home.
Vernon was honoured by gospel musician Wintley Phipps, who sang a song for him as well as his friends and family.
Oprah Winfrey said, “Less than a week ago, we honoured my father in his own backyard.
“Gospel singer and my friend Wintley Phipps sang a song in his honour. He REVELED in the love and FELT it until he was unable to speak.”
Vernon Winfrey, who was born in 1933, spent 16 years as a council member representing the Metro Nashville area. He had a long history as a barber in his neighbourhood, having run a shop in East Nashville for over 50 years.
