Darcy, Fitzwilliam Esquire, also known as Mr. Darcy, is one of Jane Austen’s two main characters in her 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Darcy is the romantic interest of Elizabeth Bennet, the novel’s protagonist, and an archetype of the aloof romantic hero. The reader is given a one-sided view of Darcy for a large portion of the book, but there are hints scattered throughout that there is much more to his character than first appears. The narration of the story is almost entirely from Elizabeth’s point of view.

The narrative voice and other characters’ observations provide the aforementioned hints that Mr. Darcy is actually a noble character at heart, albeit somewhat prideful, giving the reader a healthy dose of dramatic irony as Elizabeth consistently criticizes Mr. Darcy’s character (with some prejudice). His first name is mentioned twice in the book, though most characters and the narrator only refer to him as “Mr. Darcy” or “Darcy.”
