Hu Jintao is a Chinese politician who served as general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party from 2002 to 2012. Hu Jintao was born on December 21, 1942, in Taizhou, Jiangsu province. Hu Jintao was conservative in his approach to political reforms and reinstated state control in some economic sectors that had been loosening under the previous administration. Together with his fellow Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, Hu Jintao oversaw over 10 years of steady economic growth and development that solidified China’s position as a significant global power. The Scientific Outlook on Development, which aspired to create a “Harmonious Socialist Society” that was affluent and devoid of social conflict, was one of the ways Jintao attempted to increase socioeconomic equality at home.

Under Jintao Leadership, the government also cracked down on social unrest, protests by ethnic minorities, and dissident individuals, which also resulted in numerous contentious events including the turmoil in Tibet and the adoption of the Anti-Secession Law. Hu Jintao promoted a corporate approach to diplomacy, soft power in international interactions, and “China’s peaceful growth” in terms of foreign policy. China’s influence grew during Hu’s administration in Africa, Latin America, and other emerging regions.
