Despite being born into a cricketing family (his grandfather and brother both captained Australia), Chappell struggled to establish himself as a right-handed middle-order batsman and spin bowler in international cricket.
His father was a well-known Adelaide grade cricketer who began swinging a bat as soon as he could walk, and Vic Richardson, a great all-around player who led Australia at the end of a nineteen-Test season, was his maternal grandfather. From the age of five, Chappell had weekly batting lessons, as did his younger brothers Greg and Trevor, both of whom went on to play for Australia.
