Igor Vsevolodovich Girkin is a former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer and former member of the Russian army.

Igor Girkin was instrumental in organizing militant groups in the Donetsk People’s Republic prior to the Russian Federation’s invasion of Crimea and afterwards in the Donbas conflict (DPR). Igor Girkin was born on December 1970.

Girkin led a squad of militants into Ukraine where he took part in the 2014 Siege of Sloviansk, which ended on July 5 with the separatists’ defeat after over four months.

As a result of his rise to power during the siege, he eventually rose to the position of de facto military leader of the separatist forces in the Donbass, a position that was validated by DPR “prime minister” Alexander Borodai, who on May 16 named him as the territory’s Minister of Defense.

Following the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in August 2014, Girkin was fired. Girkin and three other people have been accused of murder by Dutch authorities, who have also issued an international arrest request for him.

While denying pressing the button, Girkin has acknowledged “moral responsibility.” Prosecutors demanded life sentences on December 22, 2021; the Dutch do not practice the death penalty.
