Igor Vysotsky, a Soviet boxer who competed from 1971 to 1980, is best known for twice knocking out triple Olympic champion Teófilo Stevenson. Despite never competing in the Olympics, he was the only boxer to ever knock Stevenson out of a match. Igor Vysotsky held the title of Soviet Heavyweight Champion in 1978 and, in the eyes of Americans, was the best Soviet heavyweight of the late 1970s.

Vysotsky, who competed for the Trud Sports Club, was renowned for his aggressive style, punching power, stamina, and durable chin.

Despite having 24 losses on Igor Vysotsky’s record, he had never suffered any other type of defeat than a standing one. Vysotsky was born into an immigrant family. During World War II, his father, Yakov Antonovich Vysotsky, was a Soviet Naval Infantryman fighting for the Red Navy against the Germans. Igor Vysotsky was severely wounded and was captured as a prisoner of war.
