Iker Casillas was born in Móstoles, Madrid, on May 20, 1981, to José Luis Casillas, a civil servant in the Ministry of Education, and Mara del Carmen Fernández González, a hairdresser. Both of his parents had left their hometown of Navalacruz, vila. Casillas began his career in Real Madrid’s youth system, known as La Fábrica, during the 1990-91 season. On November 27, 1997, at the age of 16, he was called up to the senior team squad for the first time to face Rosenborg in the UEFA Champions League, but he remained on the bench the entire game. Iker Casillas came into contention as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper after spending a season with the C-team in the fourth tier, where they won their regional group.

Starting the 1999-2000 UEFA Champions League group stage match against Olympiakos on 15 September 1999, Iker Casillas became the competition’s youngest goalkeeper at the time, aged 18 years and 177 days; a record that was only broken in October 2017 by Mile Svilar. Casillas had made his La Liga debut three days earlier in a 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés Stadium. Just four days after his 19th birthday, Iker Casillas became the youngest goalkeeper in history to play in and win a Champions League final when Real Madrid defeated Valencia 3-0 in May 2000.
