Alex Pereira, who grew up in a favela, dropped out of middle school at the age of 12 to work in a tire shop. Alex Pereira began drinking after being influenced by his colleagues and eventually became an alcoholic. In order to overcome his addiction, he began training in kickboxing in 2009. Yousri Belgaroui and Pereira first crossed paths at the Glory 40 and Glory 49 Superfight Series. Then, in 2018, they competed for the middleweight title at the Glory 55 event in New York’s Madison Square Garden, where Belgaroui had been eliminated by an overhand right knockout at 2:29 of Round 1. It was Pereira’s sixth triumph in the Glory ring and 28th victory overall.
Pereira stated in November 2018 that he would pursue an MMA career after his contract with Glory expires in April 2019. In the end, Pereira renewed his contract with Glory, this time with the option to compete in mixed martial arts as well. Following four consecutively successful defenses of the Glory middleweight championship (against Yousri Belgaroui, Simon Marcus, and Jason Wilnis), Pereira moved up to compete against Donegi Abena for the interim Glory Light Heavyweight Championship at Glory 68. Pereira became the first double champion in Glory history after winning the match by knockout in the third round.
