William Jefferson White, Jefferson’s maternal great-grandfather, was born in the 1830s to a slave mother and a white slave owner.

In Augusta, Georgia, where Morehouse College is currently located, Jefferson’s grandfather, a clergyman, founded an all-black boys ministerial school in 1867.

Jefferson was the sole African-American to attend Craft Elementary School, Munger Intermediate School, and Chadsey High School, where he graduated in 1938.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology from Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1942.

Lt. Col. Jefferson passed away this week after living a long life of service to his country.

In Rouge Park, where he spent many of his formative years as a citizen of Detroit, Jefferson celebrated his 100th birthday.

In his honour, the city also rededicated Jefferson Airfield.
