Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin, a left winger for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, was born in Russia on September 17, 1985. (NHL). Nicknamed “Ovi” (sometimes spelled “Ovie”) and “the Great Eight,” Ovechkin owns the record for the most power play goals in NHL history and is recognized as one of the game’s best goal scorers of all time.

Ovechkin started his professional career in 2001 with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Superleague, where he played for four seasons until briefly returning during the NHL lockout in 2012–13. Ovechkin, a highly anticipated talent, was taken first overall by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Ovechkin won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year in 2005–06 after leading all rookies in points with 52 goals and 54 assists. He also finished third in league scoring during his first season with the Capitals.

In addition to three times receiving the Lester B. Pearson Award/Ted Lindsay Award from the National Hockey League Players’ Association, he also received the Hart Memorial Trophy three times (in 2008, 2009, and 2013). (2008, 2009, 2010). Ovechkin is a prolific goal scorer who has amassed an NHL-record nine victories in the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, given annually to the league’s top goal scorer. His first victory came in 2007-08, the same season that his 65 goals and 112 points earned him the Art Ross Trophy for most points scored. Additionally, he has earned spots on the NHL Second All-Star Team four times and the NHL First All-Star Team eight times.He is presently third all-time in goals with a total of 50 in nine different seasons, which ties him with Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for the most 50-goal seasons in NHL history. Ovechkin was ranked among the top 100 NHL players of all time in 2017. [4] Ovechkin made history in 2018 by winning the Stanley Cup for the first time. He also received the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the playoffs’ most valuable player.

Ovechkin has competed for Russia in a number of international competitions. The 2002 World U18 Championship served as his first to IIHF competition. He made his World Junior Championship debut the following year, helping Russia win the gold medal. He participated in the World Junior Championships for two additional years and the World U18 Championships once more. 2004 saw Ovechkin compete in both the World Cup and his first senior competition, the World Championship. In addition, Ovechkin represented Russia in games at the Winter Olympics in 2006, 2010, and 2014. Ovechkin has won the World Championship three times and has competed for Russia at thirteen World Championships and three Olympics overall.
