Ovechkin began his professional career in 2001 with Russian Super league team Dynamo Moscow, where he spent four seasons before making a brief comeback in 2012 –13 due to the NHL lockout. The Capitals selected Ovechkin, a highly anticipated talent, first overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. With 52 goals and 54 assists, Ovechkin had the most points of any rookie in 2005–06, earning him the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year. His first year with the Capitals saw him finish third in the league in scoring.
