His paternal grandfather’s family emigrated from Lithuania in the early 1900s. He stated in 2004 that his paternal grandmother, Molly Vanderveen, was of “a pastiche of English, Irish, French, and Dutch (and, as we’ve recently learned, some Mohican blood)” descent. When Kiedis was three years old, his parents divorced, and he was raised by his mother in Grand Rapids. Later in life, his mother remarried and had two more children. Every summer, Kiedis would spend two weeks with his father in Hollywood, and it was during these visits that the two grew closer.
Hillel Slovak’s band Anthym was the first band Kiedis saw when he was 15 years old. After the performance, Slovak invited Kiedis to his home for a snack.
