August Anthony Alsina, Jr. was born on September 3, 1992, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was thereafter known simply as August Alsina. Fearing the consequences of his father and stepfather’s cocaine addiction, her mother relocated him to Houston, Texas for a fresh start. He spent his adolescence there, covering Musiq Soulchild and Lyfe Jennings and submitting them to YouTube. To his amazement, it received excellent feedback and thousands of views. A conflict with his mother prompted him to return to his hometown, where he trafficked drugs. The shooting death of his brother in August 2010 was a watershed moment in his life when he was resolved to pursue singing seriously.
Motivated to pursue a career in music, he travelled to Atlanta, Georgia, and recorded “The Product,” a mixtape that was published in April 2012. His track “I Luv This Shit,” which served as the lead single from his second mixtape “The Product 2,” was released early the following year. The song immediately rose to number 13 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart and 48 on the Hot 100. Alsina followed the release of “The Product 2” in May 2013 with an EP titled “Life Under the Gun” in August.
