His parents divorced when he was three years old. Willie Mays was raised by his mother’s younger sister, Sarah, and was inspired to play baseball after watching his father perform flawlessly. Willie Mays attended Fairfield Industrial High School and participated in a variety of sports there.

Mays was given the opportunity to play professional baseball with the Chattanooga Choo-Choos of Tennessee in 1947, and Willie Mays later joined the Negro American League. The New York Giants eventually signed him and assigned him to their Class-B affiliate in New Jersey. Mays hit.247 with 68 RBI and 20 home runs in 121 games in 1951, the lowest total of his career, but he still won Rookie of the Year. He rose to prominence in Harlem.
Willie Mays was drafted in 1952 during the Korean War and missed two seasons of football. In 1954, he returned to the Giants and hit.345 with 41 home runs, earning him the National League emblem of the year.
