Late in 1969, Gibbons founded ZZ Top, which was first made available in early 1971. In 2018, Billy Gibbons and John Fogerty formed a band; the two guitarists are organizing a summer tour under the name “The Holy Grail.” In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Billy Gibbons stated that writing a song with John Fogerty was a genuine bonus. Fogerty wrote the song “The Holy Grail,” to which Gibbons contributed his vocals and some guitar.

Gibbons paid $250 for a sunburst 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar from a farmer in Houston, Texas, in 1968. The guitar was named Pearly Gates, after the dangerous-to-drive rolling-wreck car he sold to purchase the guitar. Since the band’s inception in 1969, the guitar has served as the foundation/benchmark for every ZZ Top album.
