In the US, December 7 is Pearl Harbor Day, a day set aside to honour and remember the 2,403 Americans killed by the Japanese during World War II. World War II began on December 8, 1941, the day after the United States decided to declare war on Japan following a surprise attack on Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor.
The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked the neutral United States at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, close to Honolulu, Hawaii, early on December 7, 1941, resulting in 2,403 American fatalities and 1,178 wounded. Four US Navy warships were damaged and four were sunk as a result of the attack. Additionally, three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer were all damaged. 189 aircraft sustained damage, while 188 were lost.
Canada was the first nation in the West to declare war on Japan in the hours following the attack on Pearl Harbor. By declaring war on Japan on December 8, the United States legally joined World War II as an ally. In a speech to Congress, President Franklin D. Roosevelt described the bombing of Pearl Harbor as “a date which will live in infamy.”
