During a member of the Los Angeles-based improvisational and sketch comedy troupe The Groundlings, Peterson developed a “Valley girl”-style role that served as the foundation for her Elvira persona.
The success of Elvira’s Cinema Macabre led to the production of Elvira: Mistress of the Dark in 1988 and Elvira’s Haunted Hills in 2001, both of which starred Peterson as Elvira.
