Loyer’s father’s position as a basketball coach made him move around a lot as a child. The first time they moved, he attended Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Michigan. During his sophomore season, Loyer had a triple-double of 22 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. After his sophomore year, Loyer’s family relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he enrolled at Homestead High School.
During his junior year, he averaged 24.4 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.9 rebounds. Loyer, who averaged 26.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game as a senior, was voted the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year. As a sophomore in high school, Loyer, a three-star recruit, chose Purdue over offers from Nebraska, Michigan, Notre Dame, Utah, and Missouri to play collegiate basketball. He later received a four-star recruit rating.
