In actual life, Freddie Highmore is not autistic. Alongside showrunner David Shore, he did a ton of research for the part. Additionally, the program enlisted Melissa Reiner, a consultant on autism, to assist in creating Shaun Murphy.
In addition, Shaun said to ABC’s Peter Travers, “[We] just shared books, bits of literature, and documentaries that we thought were beneficial or offered us some type of insight into constructing this one, very distinct persona.”
