Is gay marriage legal in Cuba?

After a referendum two days earlier saw a majority of voters approve the legalization of same-sex marriage, same-sex marriage has been permitted in Cuba since September 27, 2022. Up until this year, the Cuban Constitution forbade same-sex unions, but the government announced plans to change that in May 2019.

The National Assembly of People’s Power approved a draft family code on December 21, 2021, which included provisions allowing same-sex couples to get married and have children.

The text was up for public comment until June 6, 2022, and the Assembly approved it on July 22, 2022. At a referendum on September 25, 2022, two-thirds of voters approved the proposal. The first proposal for a civil union law came in 2007.
