With the landmark decision Obergefell v. Hodges, the US Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal in every state in June of 2015. After this ruling, Louisiana had to acknowledge same-sex unions and issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

However, some government representatives initially resisted enforcing the decision, sparking controversy and legal issues. As the first and only city in the state to do so, the city of New Orleans began providing health insurance benefits to the same-sex partners of city employees in 1997.

Is gay marriage legal in Louisiana?

In Louisiana, gay marriage will be accepted as of 2023. Since the Obergefell ruling, same-sex couples in Louisiana have been able to legally wed despite early opposition.

LGBTQ+ people now have additional legal protections from hate crimes and employment discrimination from the state. Although same-sex unions are permitted in Louisiana, LGBTQ+ people may still experience prejudice and have trouble obtaining certain services or protections.

Advocates are still fighting for more social and legal acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community in Louisiana and across the country.
