Due to legislation passed by the Parliament on July 12, 2017, same-sex marriage has been permitted in Malta since September 1. President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca ratified the legislation on August 1st, 2017. On August 25, 2017, a legal notice to start the law on September 1 was issued by Helena Dalli, who was the minister for equality.
Since the Civil Unions Act was passed in 2014, Malta has permitted civil unions for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples. It accords civil union partners the same privileges, obligations, and rights as marriage, including the right to co-parent children.
On April 14, 2014, the measure received final approval from the legislature with 37 votes in favor and 30 against. Coleiro Preca, who also signed it into law, published it in the official gazette the following day on April 16.
On June 13, 2014, the first civil union was performed. At a celebration for International Women’s Day in March 2016, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat declared that he personally supported the country’s legalization of same-sex marriage and that it was “time for a national debate.”
