However, some county clerks initially forbade same-sex couples from receiving marriage licenses, which resulted in legal disputes and confusion. Since that time, same-sex couples in South Carolina have been able to legally wed and take advantage of all the same privileges as heterosexual couples, including the right to inherit and the right to have children.
