Before the age of 14, Karlaftis had never played football. He was born and raised in Greece, which explains why. Following his father’s death from a heart attack, he and his mother moved back to Indiana, close to their family’s home. Karlaftis’ primary sport had previously been water polo.
He became a part of the Greek U-16 national team at the age of 13 and adds, “I was incredibly brilliant at it.” The ball, on the other hand, was still very fresh. “I had no idea what a first down was, how to stand, how to throw a spiral,” he explained. “It was a major undertaking.” “I was absolutely oblivious to everything that was going on.”
Karlaftis grew up near Purdue’s campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, and quickly rose through the ranks of the defence.
Karlaftis, who grew to 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds as a teenager in 2019, had 7.5 sacks. After that, the bags weren’t as huge, 4.5 last season.
Karlaftis, on the other hand, used to see teams double, and he still garnered first-team All-Big Ten honours while Purdue won nine games in 19 years.
