American actress, model, and writer Hari Nef was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 21, 1992. Nef was recognized for her ground-breaking work as Gittel in the Amazon original series Transparent with a 2016 Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

At the time this article was published, Hari was thirty years old. After her parents’ divorced when she was two years old, Hari Nef was raised by her mother in Newton, Massachusetts. In May 2015, Nef graduated from Columbia University with a degree in drama.

Nef played Tante Gittel in the Transparent television series, which won an Emmy in 2015. Gittel is modelled after a relative of the Pfefferman family who lived in Berlin, Germany, during the Weimar Republic as a cross-dresser before dying in the Holocaust.

The character was created for Nef by the author Joey Soloway after the two first met online and at a PFLAG event. She received a 2016 SAG Award nomination for the role.

Nef has written biographies on a range of artists and cultural figures, including the painter Nash Glynn, the actor-singer Cristina Ortiz Rodriguez, the director John Waters, and the creators of the Spanish biographical television series Veneno, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi.
