After winning his first Soviet national championship in 1973, Vysotsky went on to win a total of six consecutive national titles.

In addition, Igor Vysotsky took home gold and silver medals from the 1974 World Amateur Boxing Championships and the 1974 European Amateur Boxing Championships.

Vysotsky competed in the light welterweight division and took home the gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. On his way to the top of the podium, he defeated competitors from North Korea, Argentina, Cuba, and the United States. Vysotsky worked as a coach and a sports official in Russia after retiring from boxing.
