John Paul Getty III was born on November 4, 1956, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he was the great-grandson of the former world’s richest man and American oil tycoon, known as J. Paul Getty.
He was taken hostage by the ‘Ndrangheta in 1973 while residing in Rome and was kept captive for a $17 million ransom. John Paul Getty III’s grandpa was hesitant to make a payment, but after a newspaper got a picture of his severed ear, he agreed to pay $2.2 million, and five months after his kidnapping, Getty was freed. Soon after, Getty developed a drug and alcohol addiction, which eventually led to an overdose and stroke that left him permanently crippled.
Getty attended St. George’s British International School in Rome while still living in Italy with his mother Gail. Early in 1972, Getty was expelled from St. George’s after defamatory wording directed against the headmaster of the school was painted six feet high in a school hallway.
His stepmother allegedly overdosed on drugs in Rome in July 1971, leading to his father’s relocation back to the UK in part to mourn her.
