When José Eduardo dos Santos was president of Angola, the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the nation’s ruling party since the nation’s independence in 1975, were both under his command.

Only one president kept office for longer: Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, who took office less than two months before dos Santos. He has the second-longest tenure of any African president.

Dos Sandos joined the MPLA, an anti-colonial movement, while still a student, and earned degrees in petroleum engineering while studying in the Soviet Union.

He participated in the Angolan War of Independence on the side of the MPLA, which accepted Marxism-Leninism as its doctrine and was the only recognized party upon the country’s independence in 1975.

Later, he held a number of positions, including that of Minister of Foreign Affairs under Agostinho Neto’s administration.
