She was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1942 and received her undergraduate degree from American University in Washington, D.C., and her law degree from New York Law School.

After working as a corporate lawyer, she became a prosecutor in the family court system in New York City. She was later appointed a judge in the family court, where she served for 15 years.

Sheindlin’s unique and straightforward approach to dispensing justice caught the attention of television producers and she was offered a job as the star of her own court show, “Judge Judy, in 1996.” The show quickly became one of the highest-rated programs on daytime television and has been on the air for over 25 seasons.
