Captain Marvel (also known as Shazam on Earth-Prime) is a DC Comics superhero who serves as the protector of Fawcett City. In his secret identity, he is William Joseph “Billy” Batson, a young boy chosen by the wizard Shazam to be a champion of good. Whenever Billy mentions the wizard’s name, he is struck by a magical thunderbolt that transforms him into an adult superhero with the powers of six legendary figures. Captain Marvel has faced numerous foes throughout his many adventures, the most notable of which are Doctor Sivana, Black Adam, and Mister Mind. He has, however, gained many allies, including Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr, forming the Marvel Family.
Captain Marvel debuted in Whiz Comics #2. Captain Marvel’s first appearance in the Modern Age of Comic Books, however, was in History of the DC Universe #2, after the Crisis on Infinite Earths significantly altered the character’s history. The character was renamed Shazam after the DC Universe reboot (Post-Flashpoint) and reintroduced in Justice League (Volume 2) #7.
