Deal was married to a man named John Murphy on Memorial Day 1985. Kim met Murphy through her brother Kevin – at the time, Murphy was a defense contractor who had moved to Dayton.
Shortly after getting married, they moved to Boston, Murphy’s hometown, sometime in January 1986. Murphy co-wrote Hoverin’ with Deal. Their marriage ended with the couple getting divorced in 1988. Kim Deal came out as asexual in 2009 during an interview with Jenny Stewart.
Deal became the bassist and backing vocalist for the Pixies in January 1986, after answering an advertisement in the Boston Phoenix that read, “Band seeks bassist into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul and Mary. Please no chops.”
