Samuel Lord, an English immigrant, opened the first Lord & Taylor store on Catherine Street in what is now Two Bridges, Manhattan, in 1826. Samuel Lord established a dry goods business in New York City in 1824. The shop sold hosiery, misses’ clothing, and cashmere shawls. After the addition of George Washington Taylor, the cousin of his wife, the store was renamed Lord & Taylor in 1834.

Lord & Taylor has been revived by the new leadership. Lord & Taylor, the first and oldest department store in America, is reviving itself as a modern online collective store.

In October 2020, the investment firm Saadia Group purchased Lord & Taylor. The company was transformed into an online retailer, and in April 2021, it was relaunched. In the fall of 2022, the “Fall Fete” advertising campaign and new logo were unveiled.
