Jones was born in Beaumont, in southeastern Texas. He was a son to Jessie Paralee (née Stephens) and Justus Ellis McQueen Sr., who was a railroad worker. Jones’ mother died in a car accident, in the year 1931.
He attended Lamar Junior College and Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas. He later studied law at the University of Texas at Austin from 1950 to 1951.
He served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946.
Jones worked as a stand-up comic. He played professional baseball and football shortly. He as well tried ranching in Nicaragua the finally turned to acting after corresponding with his former college roommate, Fess Parker.
