On February 7, 2022, he achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 49, and on August 23, 2021, he achieved a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 180. He won both the singles and doubles titles at the 2016 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships.
McDonald reached the fourth round of a Major for the second time in 2021, defeating Marco Cecchinato, 22nd seed Borna ORI, and Lloyd Harris. He was defeated in straight sets in the fourth round by eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev.
McDonald reached the ATP 500 semifinals for the first time at the 2021 Citi Open, defeating defending champion Nick Kyrgios, 13th seed Benoît Paire, Ilya Ivashka, and Denis Kudla.
