Manuel Neuer was a member of Schalke 04 II from 2003-04 to 2004-05, 2006-07 to 2007-08, and 2008-09. Neuer progressed through every age group at Schalke 04 before signing professional terms in 2005. During the 2005-06 season, Neuer made no first-team appearances. On matchday 2 of the 2006-07 season, he made his Bundesliga debut for Schalke as a substitute for the injured Frank Rost. When Rost was unexpectedly dropped for the match against Bayern Munich, the 20-year-old won the starting spot. Neuer earned a 2-2 draw against the defending champions. During the 2006-07 season, Manuel Neuer made 27 league appearances. He was regarded as a potential successor to his former idol, Jens Lehmann, for the German national team despite his youth.
Neuer began the 2007-08 season by appearing in three German League Cup matches. On 5 March 2008, Manuel Neuer almost single-handedly kept Schalke in the game against Porto in the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League, forcing the game to penalties. Manuel Neuer then saved penalties from Bruno Alves and Lisandro López, advancing Schalke to the quarter-finals. Manuel Neuer was the youngest and only Bundesliga goalkeeper on the list of finalists for the 2007–2008 UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year award. In the 2007–08 Bundesliga season, he was one of just three players to log every minute of action. Manuel Neuer appeared in 50 games overall by the end of the season.
