As the daughter of diplomat Sargent Shriver and Eunice Kennedy, the sister of President John F. Kennedy, Shriver was raised in a politically significant family.
After graduating from Georgetown University with a B.A. in American studies, she started working as a writer and producer for Philadelphia’s KYW television station in 1977.
In 1978, she joined the Baltimore, Maryland-based television program Evening Magazine as a writer and producer, and in 1983, she joined CBS as a national news correspondent.
She was appointed co-anchor of the CBS Morning News shortly after, a position she held for three years.
She moved from CBS to NBC in 1986, where she worked as a news journalist and the host of Main Street, a television news magazine for young adults.
She wed actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the same year. Shriver co-anchored the Sunday edition of the NBC news program Today from 1987 until 1990.
From 1989 to 2004, when she resigned due to conflicts of interest that developed after her husband was elected governor of California (2003–11), she served as a correspondent for Dateline. 2013 saw her come back to NBC.
