Born on January 4, 1960, John Michael Stipe is an American singer-songwriter and visual artist. The alternative rock band R.E.M., of which he is the lead vocalist and lyricist, is most known for him. He has a following thanks to his unique theatrical appearance, original words, and vocal range. John Michael Stipe was born to Marianne and John Stipe in Decatur, Georgia. In 1978, he graduated from Collinsville High School in Illinois.
While a student at the University of Georgia in Athens, Stipe frequently visited the Wuxtry record shop, where he first met store employee Peter Buck in 1980. Buck took notice of his striking appearance and the strange music he had bought—something few other customers did. After becoming friends, they formed a band, got close, and started writing music together.
Soon after Buck and Stipe chose the name R.E.M. at random from a dictionary, Bill Berry and Mike Mills joined them. Stipe was the group’s youngest member. The four members of R.E.M. all dropped out of school in 1980 to focus on the budding band.
In order to record their third album, Fables of the Reconstruction, R.E.M. travelled to England in 1985. The difficult recording process almost led to the band breaking up. Even after the album’s release, the band’s relationships remained tense. Stipe later acknowledged feeling hopeless and worn out, saying, “I was well on my way to losing my mind.” He was also gaining weight and acting erratically during this period.
