He and his sister Tammi began studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) at the age of 4 under the tutelage of Fernando “Cabeça” at Fatjo’s Martial Arts Academy.
Five-time IBJJF Black Belt World Champion Michael Musumeci has won the title in both Gi and No-Gi competitions. In coloured belts, he has also won the Pan American and World Championships four times each.
The first American with several IBJJF World black belt titles is Musumeci. He is now the ONE Championship’s flyweight submission grappling champion.
Musumeci met Estevan Martinez on January 21, 2022, and won, successfully retaining his WNO Bantamweight title. Soon after that, he joined with ONE Championship. After signing with ONE Championship, Musumeci switched gyms once more and moved to Singapore to train at Evolve MMA.
Musumeci was set to defend his title for the second time against Osamah Almarwai at ONE Fight Night 10 on May 5, 2023. At 8:03, he retained the flyweight title by rear-naked choking the opponent to victory.
