Gorbachev, Mikhail Sergeyevich, was a Russian and Soviet politician who served as the last leader of the Soviet Union from 2 March 1931 until his death on 30 August 2022.

From 1988 to 1989, he presided over the Supreme Soviet’s Presidium; from 1989 to 1990, he was Chairman of the Supreme Soviet; from 1985 to 1991, he was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; and from 1990 to 1991, he was President of the Soviet Union.

Although he began his political career as a Marxist-Leninist, Mikhail Gorbachev eventually embraced social democracy. By the year 1955, his hair was already beginning to thin, and by the late 1960s, he was almost completely bald, with a characteristic port-wine stain visible on the crown of his head.

By the time he was an adult, Gorbachev stood at a height of 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m). Mikhail battled obesity throughout the 1960s and tried various diets in an effort to get a handle on the problem. Both Doder and Branson used the phrase “stocky but not fat” to describe him. Mikhail was renowned to perform both traditional folk songs and modern pop music, and he spoke with an accent typical to southern Russia.
