Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, best known as Nas, is an American rapper. He is recognized as one of the best rappers of all time, with roots in East Coast hip hop.
Jones, the son of jazz musician Olu Dara, began his musical career in 1989 under the alias “Nasty Nas” and made demos for Large Professor. He was later featured on the Main Source song “Live at the Barbeque” in 1991.
Nas’s debut album, Illmatic (1994), gained international praise upon its release and is widely regarded as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time; the album was inducted into the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2020.
It Was Written (1996), Nas’s second album, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and charted for four weeks; the album, along with its hit “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” (with Lauryn Hill), launched Nas into international fame.
