Oliver Lynn, an illiterate local in a region where coal mining was the primary source of work, was of Irish origin and was from Butcher Hollow in Johnson County, Kentucky, not far from Paintsville. After serving in the American Army during World War II, he had no desire to return to coal mining. He was nicknamed “Mooney” since his occupation was selling moonshine.
His birthday is August 27, 1926. Over the course of their 48-year, often tumultuous marriage, Lynn played a significant role in the development of his wife’s musical talent and country music career, including purchasing her first guitar, setting up her first radio appearances, and serving as her de facto talent manager for many years.
