He was renowned for writing op-ed pieces for The New York Times.

In 1974, Krugman received a B.A. from Yale University, and in 1977, he graduated with a Ph.D. from MIT. From 1979 until 2000, he was a member of the MIT economics department. He took a year off (1982–1983) to serve as the top economist on U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s Council of Economic Advisers, and he took another break (1994–1996) to teach at Stanford University.

Beginning in 1979, he also worked as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. By including economies of scale in general equilibrium models, Krugman helped to advance knowledge of the factors influencing trade and the location of industry in the increasingly globalized post-World War II economy.

Krugman was a prolific writer who penned 200 articles for academic journals in addition to more than 20 books. He published regular magazine essays in Slate and Fortune, among other publications, and he began penning op-ed sections for The New York Times in 1999.
