Paula Stewart received her first college education at Shimer College in Mount Carrol, Illinois, USA. She transferred from Shimer College to a women’s junior college, where she graduated in 1947. Paula Stewart continued her studies at Northwestern University. She joined the national touring company of Brigadoon after graduating from Northwestern University.
During her run in Nice to See You at the Versailles Club in 1953, Paula Stewart married Burt Bacharach. Burt Bacharach was her pianist and composer for her nightclub act. In 1958, they divorced. Stewart married comedian Jack Carter in 1961, and their marriage ended in divorce in 1970.
