Richard Loeb was born in Chicago on June 11, 1905, to Anna Henrietta Loeb, a well to do lawyer and former vice president of Sears, Roebuck “AND” Company. While Loeb’s father was Jewish, his mother was a Catholic.
Loeb had a high level of intelligence like Leopold. With the aid of his governess, Leb was able to skip many classes in school, and at the age of 17, he became the University of Michigan’s youngest graduate.

Richard Loeb was a University of Chicago law student at the time of the murder and was particularly keen on going on to do PhD work in history.
Comparatively less intelligent than Leopold, Loeb preferred to socialize, play tennis, and read detective novels.
