Federer began playing tennis at the age of eight and, at the age of 14, won the Swiss junior championship. Federer won the Wimbledon junior singles title and the Orange Bowl junior tournament title in Miami in 1998. The next year, Federer made his Davis Cup debut for Switzerland and, at the age of 18 years, 4 months, finished the tennis season as the youngest player to be ranked in the top 100 in the world, coming in at number 64.
Federer participated in the Sydney 2000 Olympics and made it to the bronze medal game. Federer overcame Pete Sampras at Wimbledon the next year to advance to the quarterfinals, and by the end of 2002, Federer was ranked sixth in the world. At Wimbledon in 2003, Federer captured his first Grand Slam championship. Federer won his first Australian Open, first U.S. Open, and defended his Wimbledon crown the following year. In addition to being a skilled shot-maker recognized for his forehand, he earned a reputation for poise and sportsmanship. Federer won 11 out of the 17 tournaments he participated in 2004, and he concluded the year as the top player in the world. In 2005, Federer achieved similarly impressive results, winning 11 out of 15 matches, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Federer also won 24 straight finals, which is a modern record, from July 2003 to November 2005.
