Later, Roy and his brother Millam were brought to court for judging. They were in court in September 1955. They were found not guilty of kidnapping and killing Emmett because they were prosecuted in a white-only courtroom. Later, in 1956, they told their tale to Look magazine and were shielded from prosecution due to double jeopardy. Milam then admitted to killing Emmett, but he didn’t feel bad about it since he didn’t think killing the teenager was wrong. One of the first significant hate crimes to become widely publicized on a national basis was the lynching of Emmett Till.
