In the year 1955, an African American boy named Emmett Louis Till, who had been born on July 25, 1941 and had died on August 28, 1955, was kidnapped, tortured, and ultimately put to death in the state of Mississippi.

He was believed to have insulted a white woman named Carolyn Bryant while working in the grocery store that her family owned. The brutality of his murder, coupled with the fact that his killers were judged not guilty of their crimes, brought to light the long history of prejudice and violent acts committed against African Americans in the United States. After his passing, he came to be seen as a symbol of the fight for civil rights.
