At Purdue, he played college football, and the Washington Redskins took him in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He received the unanimous All-American designation for seniors.
Kerrigan has the record for the most consecutive starts by a left outside linebacker in NFL history in the 3-4 formation, where he played outside linebacker for most of his career.
He recorded 95.5 sacks and 26 forced fumbles throughout his ten years with the squad, making him the team’s all-time leader in both stats.
In 2021, after playing with the Philadelphia Eagles for a single season, Kerrigan declared his retirement.
While attending Muncie Central High School, he participated in football as a tight end and defensive end for the Muncie Bearcats.
He accumulated 90 tackles and 19 sacks as a senior defensive end, earning him all-state honours.
As a tight end, he hauled in 40 receptions for 789 yards and six touchdowns. Three-star recruit Kerrigan selected the Boilermakers over offers from Ball State, Cincinnati, Indiana, and Northern Illinois.

Ryan Kerrigan occasionally has problems hearing his teammates on the football field, especially when they are talking into his left ear. The single-sided deafness of the 29-year-old NFL player for the Washington Redskins was something he decided to be more open about.
Some of Kerrigan’s teammates are coming to learn that he suffers from hearing loss.
Preston Smith, a different Washington Redskins player, questioned Kerrigan about a play but never received a response. He afterwards realized that he had been right near to Kerrigan’s hard-of-hearing ear.
“I was chatting to him one day, standing on his left, and I was trying to get insight on the play,” Smith recalled to the Washington Post.
He then turned to listen after that.
The thought crossed my mind, “Man, I’ve been talking all this time and you haven’t heard me.” But I didn’t know. His hearing problem astonished his teammates, who occasionally found it challenging to communicate with him, as well as the media.
Kerrigan has had hearing problems ever since kindergarten, however, some people might not be aware of this.
