While her songs such as “Hips Don’t Lie” have helped her sell over 80 million records worldwide, the singer claims she wasn’t living in Spain at the time. “Hips Don’t Lie” was the title of one of her most well-known songs.
Is Shakira going to jail?
Shakira has chosen to go to trial rather than accept a settlement offer from the prosecutor’s office to end the case earlier this week. There is no definite date for the trial.
A fine of 24 million euros was also promised by the prosecution (or 20.2 million British pounds).
According to Shakira’s publicists, she has always paid her taxes on time. In addition to 3 million euros (£2.5 million) in interest, the artist deposited the sum she is believed to owe, according to the report.
Catalan tax authorities have claimed that between 2012 and 2014, the Grammy winner spent more than half of each year in Spain and should have paid taxes.
