Historically, the name usually refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on 1 May 1776 in Bavaria, today part of Germany.

However, the society’s goals were to oppose superstition, obscurantism, religious influence over public life, and abuses of state power.

Ferdinand of Brunswick and the diplomat Franz Xaver von Zach, who served as the Order’s second-in-command, were among the prominent thinkers and progressive politicians who claimed membership in the organization.

Authors like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Gottfried Herder, and the current Dukes of Gotha and Weimar were drawn to it.

Is the Illuminati real?
